All I need is a photo to draw from.
The Philosophy
I have a unique perspective on hand-drawn art: Art ─ at least at first ─ is misunderstood & undervalued. Pulling from my education outside the art world, I understand that art can be intimidating & overwhelming. I am committed to making hand-drawn art more accessible and easy to order. Art is what makes our world worth all of our hard work, and illustrates how our memories, emotions, and experiences can be embedded in those hand-drawn works: Between every brush stroke holds a story, every mark a memory, and every line a place. I am just humbled that I can be part of the process.
The Story
I began my career outside the art world. I received my undergraduate degree in Physics from Hampden-Sydney College (in central Virginia) in 2001, where I had planned -at least at first- to be a civil engineer. After graduating, he began to realize that engineering was not meant for him.
I went to graduate school to study architecture at Savannah College of Art & Design until 2006. It was in Savannah, Georgia where I knew this is where I was meant to be. I fell in love with Savannah's pre-Civil War architecture, the Live Oaks & Spanish moss, and the 22 Squares (read, parks) which are the beloved icons of Savannah's identity & history. I was also fortunate enough to attend SCAD Lacoste in France for 3 months, gaining invaluable knowledge, experience, and culture from one of the greatest art destinations of the world.
After leaving SCAD with his architecture education in 2006, I worked in a couple of architecture firms on the east coast: Candace MP Smith Architect, P.C., located in Charlottesville, Virginia, where I gained my foundation of experience in architecture. And then working with Greenline Architecture (previously Poticny Deering Felder Architecture) for nearly four years, where I helped to design & build historic renovations, worship centers, restaurants, retail, and private residences in the Savannah area.
No matter where I worked, I had been considered the resident artist, where I drew the client's houses for presentations, permitting, or for marketing purposes.
After moving to Indianapolis with my wife, and frustrated with finding a job in a post-recession economy, I went to a local coffee shop and started drawing. Unbeknownst to me, a couple was watching my progress behind me. They approached me and asked, "Could you draw my house?" Surprised and taken a little off-guard, I replied, "Sure, yeah. I think i can." The couple replied, "Oh, but our house is far away. Will you have to travel to it to draw it?" Struck by inspiration, I responded, "Nope, all I need is a photo."
And that was how I started my architectural illustration business in 2010.
